Becoming a Fairtrade Town: - what was involved? To become a Fairtrade Town, five goals had to be met, which were set by the The Fairtrade Foundation. Chester-le-Street District Council passed a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and now serves Fairtrade coffee and tea at its meetings and in its offices and canteens. A range of Fairtrade products had to be readily available in the area’s shops and served in local cafés and catering establishments. Fairtrade products were to be used by a number of local work places, educational establishments, faith communities such as www.maryandcuthbert.org.uk and other community organisations. Fairtrade and the town had to attract media coverage and organise events to include Fairtrade Fortnight/Market stall, celebratory dinner and to gain popular support for the campaign. A Fairtrade Steering Group was to meet regularly to ensure continued commitment to Fairtrade Town status, with the composition of the steering group being representative of the community overall. |
